Simon Khan slipped out of contention at The Open after once again being blown off course by the St Andrews wind.

Having made the cut comfortably on one under, Khan dropped four shots over the back nine on Saturday to come home in 38 for a one-over 73 - and level par.

"It's not as windy as it was," said the Essex pro. "But it's getting up on the far side, making it so hard to judge.

"It's definitely stronger there and, if you let your mind slip, which I think I did mine today, it can cost you."

Having gone out in 35, thanks to eight pars and a birdie at the seventh, Khan then three-putted 10 before doing the same at 12 after almost driving the green.

"Then I drove into one of the Coffins on 13," Epping-born Khan told BBC Sport. "That was the first bunker I've been in all week and, at 17, I then got involved with the Road Hole bunker, which cost me another shot."

All four holes cost bogey fives and the Chingford 38-year-old only partially made amends with birdies at 15 and 18.

"I played nicely on the front nine and got that birdie at 7," added Khan. "But then the wind caught me out at 10 and l left it well short.

"All a bit disappointing, if I'm honest, but there's worse places to be than St Andrews on a Sunday afternoon.

"I know I can still improve, especially if the wind drops.

"It's the place you want to be and I'm looking forward to it."
