Ian Woosnam has made a disappointing start to his final charge for a back-to-back Senior Order of Merit title.

The Welshman leads the Order of Merit going into the final tour event at the Castellon Championship and is eight shots off the first round lead.

Woosnam fought back from a tricky start to finish with back-to-back birdies to end day one on level par in Spain.

Paraguayan Angel Franco leads after an eight-under-par 64 with Australian Mike Harwood a shot further back.

Former world number one Woosnam, the 1991 Masters champion, could win his second successive senior crown with a good performance at the Club de Campo del Mediterráneo and other results go his way.

Sam Torrance, a fellow former Ryder Cup skipper, could pip Woosnam and win his third Senior Tour title and the Scot is three shots off the lead following the first round after a five-over-par 67.

England's Carl Mason - a three-time senior title winner - is also in the running to claim his fourth crown and is four shots off the lead after a first round score of 68.
