Woosnam has battled ME for over a year |
Ian Woosnam has set his sights on winning a senior major after being crowned the Senior Tour number one. Having battled the ME virus to return to competitive golf this year, Woosnam is the first former European Order of Merit winner to make the senior summit. The 50-year-old Welshman said: "This ranks alongside the rest of my achievements in my career. "Once I got the first win I felt more confident, and after that I just felt I could win every tournament." But Woosnam believes he still has a long way to go to overcome the debilitating illness. He said: "I would still say I'm nowhere near 100%, I'm probably around 75%. "I still don't feel well in the mornings and I get really tired, but I feel comfortable on the Senior Tour and what I want to do now is win a major. "It would be great to win the Senior Open Championship next year." Woosnam won the Masters at Augusta in 1991 and was the European Tour's Order of Merit winner in 1987 and 1990. In 2006, he captained Europe to a crushing Ryder Cup victory over the US in Ireland.
