Londoner Anthony Wall safely made the halfway cut at Turnberry on level par, despite slipping back from his first-day 68 with a two-over 72.

After a birdie at the first, he then dropped shots at 5 and 9, followed by two more at 13 and 16 before he got back to level with a birdie at 15.

But Chigwell's Oliver Fisher did not fare so well at his first Open as he bowed miserably out.

After a first day 79, he only improved by a shot with a 78.

"I struggled," Fisher told BBC Sport, "so there's not much to take from it.

"I've got to do a bit of work on my game.

"You've still got to hit it straight and hit the greens and I didn't do that. "
