Wall hits a drive during his opening round at Turnberry

Anthony Wall maintained his decent record at the Open Championship as he carded a first round two-under par 68.

After going to the turn in level-par 35, the Camberley-based Londoner birdied the last two holes to come home in 33.

He told BBC Sport: "Two lovely birdies. I played solid, but not spectacular. You've just got to grind it out.

"The weather was gorgeous. We just missed a couple of showers and you couldn't have had it any better."

Wall, who has made the cut at three of the four Opens he has played in and was top Englishman when he tied for 11th in his best finish at Hoylake in 2006, admitted: "If anything the weather is going to deteriorate but you wouldn't wish bad weather on anybody. You just hope it's not you."

In any case, it should not affect Wall's preparations ahead of his 1203 BST second round start time on Friday - as he was planning to do his recent back injury some good by spending the afternoon in the pool with his two young sons Patrik and Lawrence.

"We'll probably pick up the kids and go swimming," added 34-year-old Wall. "The back's probably 95 per cent. A few aches and pains but that's just old age."

Fellow Londoner Oliver Fisher did not fare nearly so well, running up a nine-over 79.

Fisher dropped shots at his first two holes, stopped the rot briefly with a birdie at the testing 489-yard third, but then came three more successive bogeys.

It was the seventh before he made his first par but another dropped shot at the ninth saw him go out in 40.

And he then dropped four more at 11, 12, 14 and 18 to find himself sat joint second last in the 156-strong field.
