Finch plays his approach to the 7th green in his second round at Turnberry |
Hull's Richard Finch failed to find his form as he missed the halfway cut at the 138th Open Championship after a second-round 78. Already up against it at Turnberry after his first-day 73, Finch was in need of an improvement. But the weather was not in his favour and he double bogied three of the opening six holes. He told BBC Sport: "I just did not play well enough. I needed to get off to a good start and I did the opposite." Finch's hopes of making the cut again, as he did on his Open debut a year ago, vanished inside the first nine holes as he went out in 42. He got a flier out of a greenside bunker at the second after being plugged, found a horrible lie in a clump of reeds to cost him two more at the 4th and then twice hit poor chips at the short 6th. With further dropped shots at 5 and 9, he had only one lone birdie at the long 7th. And, although he had a better back nine, coming home in 36, 11 over was far too many.
