Monty out of US Open qualifying

Colin Montgomerie has pulled out of the 36-hole US Open qualifier at Walton Heath on 25 May.

The European Ryder Cup captain was due to tee off at 0820 BST but has decided not to play after carding a closing 76 at the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Marc Warren and Anthony Wall, who was joint sixth in the PGA Championship, have also pulled out.

The qualifier sees just under 80 players competing for 11 spots at the US Open, which starts on 18 June.

David Howell, Niclas Fasth, Thomas Levet and Paul McGinley are some of the players that will take part at Walton Heath.

Montgomerie has had a good record in the US Open, coming third in 1992 while losing a play-off in 1994.

The 45-year-old came up one shot short in 1997 and three years ago double-bogeyed the last hole to lose by one again.

His recent form has not been good, however, and he has not had a top 10 since he was runner-up in the French Open last June.
