Highlights - Casey wins PGA Championship

Paul Casey held off the challenge of Ross Fisher to win the PGA Championship on a dramatic final day at Wentworth.

Fisher had played himself into contention with a stunning 64, a round containing eight birdies and no bogeys.

That left Casey needing a birdie at the last, but the Briton carded the four he needed to claim a one-shot victory - which lifts him to third in the world.

Soren Kjeldsen was also in the hunt but finished four behind Casey while Stephen Dodd came fourth on 12 under.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy dropped three shots on the way home to end his hopes and finished in fifth, seven shots off the lead.

Fisher's 64, which was only one outside the West Course record, left Casey needing three birdies in the final four holes to claim his third victory of the year.

Casey gave himself some work to do at the last, however, when he found the greenside bunker but managed to get up and down.

"It was not an easy putt at the last, but any putt to win is something I would like to have," said the 31-year-old, who was 41st in the world at the start of the year.

"There are great names on this trophy and it feels great. A lot of people have put in a lot of work, but I have to thank Peter Kostis, my coach in the States.

"He's more than a coach and we set some lofty goals at the start of the year.

"The BMW PGA Championship is our flagship event on the European Tour and I've always wanted to get my hands on this trophy. This feels fantastic."

Casey had led by three going into the final round but had a poor start with a bogey at the 1st before reaching the turn level par for the day.

Fisher, meanwhile, was making ground and took the lead at 14 under with his sixth birdie of the day at the 12th.

Casey then birdied the same hole to draw level before taking the lead with a 15-foot birdie putt at 15.

Fisher birdied the final two par-five holes to set the clubhouse total but Casey did the same for a 68 and a winner's cheque for £667,093.

Casey, who also won the World Match Play title at Wentworth in 2006, is the first Briton to make the world's top three since Colin Montgomerie nine years ago.

Since the rankings began in 1986, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam are the only others to make it as high.

Colin Montgomerie was joint 10th with a round to go but any possible challenge ended at the first when he carded a seven.

He also had a six at the last for a final-round 76 to leave him in 35th spot on one under.

The European Ryder Cup captain has still not had a top 10 finish since he was runner-up in the French Open last June.

Last year's PGA Championship winner Miguel Angel Jimenez made only the third albatross of the European season by sinking a 206-yard six-iron to the fourth.

It was the high point of an otherwise disappointing day however, as he carded a 76 - which included a triple-bogey seven - to end up on level par.
