Dyson battles on with neck injury

Dyson hopes he can manage the next few days in Portugal without problems

York golfer Simon Dyson made a good start in the Estoril Open de Portugal despite an ongoing neck injury.

He was tied in third place after carding a four under par 67 after the first round.

Dyson told BBC Radio York: "I'm not 100% fit. I've done my neck in. I didn't play very well last week because of it and I just can't hit full shots.

"It probably helps me that it's windy. You don't have to hit full shots in the wind so I managed to get round."

Dyson explained his problem started in Spain last month.

"The beds were not very comfortable. I woke up and just something had gone in my neck.

Every drive I went for today I must have blocked all of them 40 yards right so I just haven't been going at anything

"All the physiotherapy and all that just doesn't seem to be helping it but I just can't seem to hit a full shot.

"I'm going to see someone next week when I get home and hopefully it'll be sorted."

Dyson said he has been troubled by neck problems previously but this time it is worse than those he has experienced before.

"This one has just gone kind of over the top. It's just not easing up at all and it feels like it could go really bad if I really push it.

"Every drive I went for today I must have blocked all of them 40 yards right so I just haven't been going at anything.

"I've just been trying to keep it low. We'll just see how it goes. Then I'll get a bit of a break and see what's really wrong with it."
