Mickelson needed hospital treatment on Saturday after his third round |
American Phil Mickelson overcame a bout of heat exhaustion and mild dehydration to claim a victory at the WGC-CA Championships in Florida. The new world number two needed hospital treatment after feeling ill following his third round on Saturday. But he showed few ill-effects as he completed a one-shot win over compatriot Nick Watney at Doral. Watney was left chasing Mickelson after bogeys on the 11th and 12th following an eagle at the par-five 10th. Mickelson, who was winning his first World Golf Championship title, had started the final round level with Watney. The co-leaders had stretched their advantage over the field from four shots overnight to seven as they battled one another for a second tournament victory of the year. Mickelson made a good start with two birdies in his opening two holes and although he dropped a shot at the fourth, further birdies at the fifth, eighth and 10th kept him in contention. | IAIN CARTER BLOG |
Another American, Furyk, moved to 16 under with birdies at the 15th and 16th holes but the top two held their nerve to stay ahead. At the 18th, with Mickelson still leading by one shot, Watney saw his 30-foot birdie putt stop just short of the hole. It allowed Mickelson, who was just off the back of the green, to two-putt from 26 feet to take his second title of the year. "I haven't eaten much in three days, so I really wasn't able to appreciated what others were doing but Nick played some great shots and I was very relieved to come out on top," said Mickelson. Tiger Woods, in his first stroke-play event after undergoing knee surgery last year, finished with a round of 68 to finish in a tie for ninth. Briton Oliver Wilson recorded his best finish on the PGA Tour when he scored a 66 to finish in a tie for fifth with Colombia's Camilo Villegas. Rory McIlroy's tournament ended in disappointing fashion with a bogey at the last for a final-round 73 but the 19-year-old from Northern Ireland still managed a second consecutive top-20 finish in the US. Ian Poulter wrapped things up for a final-round 69 to finish on 10 under in a seven-way tie for 13th before revealing he had had a cyst removed from his right wrist earlier in the week. "I went in for a scan because it was sore and it showed a cyst which has been there for a long time," said the Briton. "It is good news in a way because they syringed it and it took the pain away. "That is what the problem has been on my wrist for the last little while but it has never really showed up before so now it got big enough that it showed on an MRI and I was able to get it syringed."
