Faldo left McGinley out of his squad for the Seve trophy |
Colin Montgomerie says the timing of Paul McGinley's resignation as a Ryder Cup assistant captain is "unfortunate". McGinley was in captain Nick Faldo's backroom team for the 2008 event but says he wants to focus on his own game.
His decision was announced on Wednesday - after Faldo left him out of the Great Britain and Ireland squad for this week's Seve Trophy match in Ireland.
Montgomerie said: "Paul's timing was unfortunate but I don't think it will have any affect on team spirit."
Faldo named McGinley and Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal as his assistants in May but said he would select alternatives should either of them qualify.
And Montgomerie added: "At the end of the day maybe we're better picking a vice-captain a month before the event rather than so far in advance.
"Look at Thomas Bjorn, picked by Bernhard Langer for Oakland Hills a month before that event. What an inspired decision that was."
