Montgomerie wants to be Faldo's team at Valhalla, Kentucky

Last month's record-equalling 18�-9� victory over the USA in Ireland was Europe's third straight victory.

"For Nick, it's almost a shame that Europe have been so successful," said Cup stalwart Montgomerie.

"He has to continue the run as it's almost expected now, but in sport when you're expected to do anything it's tougher to achieve."

The Scot warned: "He's got a hard job ahead of him while the American captain will have nothing to lose - in fact he's expected to lose."

Montgomerie, speaking at a HSBC Wee Wonders coaching clinic, said: "A win in America would be great but it will be very difficult to achieve.

"But Nick will be a very good captain. I've learnt a lot from him over the years. I played with him in 1993 and 1995 and he loves the Ryder Cup.

"He will do it his way and that's fine because that's what you want - it's no good having a wishy-washy person in charge.

"You need leadership and someone who is decisive, and Nick is."

Faldo won six majors in a glittering playing career and still holds the record for the number of points and matches won during his 11 Ryder Cup appearances.

Montgomerie, seen as a potential European captain in Wales in 2010, said: "He is Britain's best ever player and has respect from everyone."
