Conwy Golf Club provided a stunning setting for the event |
A final round of 68 in Conwy saw England's Carl Mason power from four shots down on the eighth to claim his second Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open. A four-way play-off was looking likely before Mason, who has won 15 titles in his four years on the tour, birdied the 16th to move clear of the field.
He climbed above overnight leader Juan Quiros of Spain, who closed with a 73.
That left the Spaniard joint second with Scotland's Ross Drummond (69), two strokes behind Mason at six under.
A 500,000 prize fund means that the Wales Open is the second most lucrative event on the European Seniors Tour, Oxfordshire-man Mason taking 75,000.
"I needed to win if I was to challenge for a third Order of Merit title," said Mason, who moved up to second spot on the money list with this victory, following on from his 2005 success at Harlech.
Drummond was bitterly disappointed after missing out on his maiden Seniors title.
The Scot's challenge ended with a three-putt bogey at the 17th.
"I saw that Mason had birdied the 16th so I had to give my first putt from 25 feet a go," said Drummond.
"I ran it three and half feet past and missed the return. It was a hugely disappointing way to finish as I had played well."
Quiros, who had matched the course record with a brilliant 64 on Saturday, could not produce similar heroics and closed in 73.
Fourth place on three under par was shared by Italy's Costantino Rocca (72) and Ireland's Des Smyth, who stormed through the field with a best-of-the-day five under par 67.
