Tiger Woods surged from four shots back to lead by two after the second round of the WGC-CA Championship in Florida.

The world number one fired a six-under 66 to reach seven under overall, ahead of Australian Rod Pampling (69).

Pampling's countryman Aaron Baddeley bogeyed the last for four under alongside the likes of Thomas Bjorn, Ernie Els and Henrik Stenson.

Spain's Sergio Garcia and England's Ian Poulter ended three under but Phil Mickelson stayed five over after a 72.

Woods, the defending champion and five-time winner, rolled in an 11-footer at the par-five 12th to move into a share of the lead for the first time on a blustery day at Doral.

England's Poulter climbed into contention with a 68

He missed birdie putts on 13, 14, 15 and 16, but moved one stroke clear after recovering from the right rough at the par-four 17th set up his sixth birdie.

In driving rain on the Blue Monster course, Woods parred the difficult 467-yard 18th by holing a 10-footer after missing the fairway off the tee.

"I hit the ball well and made a few putts," said Woods, who was bogey-free and needed only 26 putts compared to 32 in his opening round of 71.

"I'm just happy to be up there. It's been a while."

The 12-time major champion, whose last win came at the Buick Invitational in January, added: "It was a little bit easier today, not as gusty and the rain was basically just on 17 and 18. The wind was pretty consistent all day."

Stenson, co-leader on 67 overnight with Australian Robert Allenby, led by two shots after 10 holes but bogeys at 17 and 18 dropped him back into the pack.

606: DEBATE

"It was another tough day out there," said world number five Stenson, who won the biggest title of his career at last month's WGC-Match Play Championship.

"I didn't drive the ball as well as yesterday and that put me in some trouble off the tee. But I'm still in decent shape for the weekend."

Allenby ended on three under after a 74, while Padraig Harrington carded 70 for one under, Luke Donald edged to level alongside Paul Broadhurst (71) and Paul Casey climbed to two over after adding a 70 to an opening 76.
