Michelle Wie equalled her worst score in a men's tournament to languish in last place after the first round of the Casio World Open in Japan.

The 17-year-old, who has only made the cut once in 12 male events, carded nine bogeys to post a nine-over-par 81.

The American said: "It was frustrating but I don't think it was the pressure. I'm not playing that badly.

"I don't think the score reflects my play. I just need to get my confidence back with my driver."

Wie started on the back nine in light rain but bogeyed the 12th and then rolled in four straight bogeys from the 14th.

The Hawaiian teenager failed to sink a single birdie and finished the first round last out of 102 players.

Japanese players Tetsuya Haraguchi, Yoshikazu Haku and Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot were tied for the lead at five under.

Wie made the cut at the men's SK Telecom Open in South Korea in May but has struggled in her last three male tournaments.

She withdrew from the John Deere Classic with heat exhaustion and finished last in the European Masters and 84 Lumber Classic.

She has yet to win a tournament on the LPGA tour in 33 appearances.
