The SK Telecom Open is Wie's eighth start at a men's event |
Michelle Wie made her first cut at a men's professional event after carding a three-under-par 69 at the Asian Tour's SK Telecom Open in South Korea. The American hit four birdies and a bogey to finish the first two rounds at five-under in her eighth men's event.
The 16-year-old is the second woman to make the halfway cut at a Korean men's event after Se Ri Pak three years ago.
"I still can't believe that I made the cut," Wie said. "I will be even happier when it all sinks in."
Wie, who also hopes to make it to this year's US Open, said she was aiming for a solid finish in the tournament and that she was looking forward to playing against the men in the United States.
"I want to challenge the PGA tour in the US and make it into the top 10," added the schoolgirl, who will take part in a local qualifier for the US Open later this month. Wie has played in four US PGA Tour events and has also competed on the Japan, Nationwide and Canadian tours, missing the 36-hole cut in all seven tournaments.
Since turning professional last year, she has missed the cut in US PGA's Casio World Open and Sony Open.
Women's number one Annika Sorenstam became the first woman in 58 years to compete on the US PGA Tour when she missed the cut at the 2003 Colonial.
The last woman to make the final two rounds of a senior men's event on the US PGA Tour was Babe Zaharias at the 1945 Tucson Open.
