Michelle Wie's caddie has expressed his "shock and surprise" at being sacked by the 16-year-old golf sensation. The experienced Greg Johnston began working for Wie when she turned professional last October.
But she failed to break par in any of her four rounds at the Women's British Open last week, and the tie for 26th was her worst finish in two years.
"I was shocked and surprised. I thought we had a successful year," Johnston told golfdigest.com on Tuesday.
A public relations firm in New York released a statement from the Wie family that said Johnson's departure came "as part of Michelle's maturation as a golfer".
Johnston previously caddied 12 years for Juli Inkster and was on the American's bag when she won four of her majors.
