Wie fails to qualify for US Open

Wie has yet to make the cut in a men's PGA Tour event
Teenager Michelle Wie failed to become the first woman to qualify for the US Open after a poor second round in the qualifying tournament in New Jersey.

A two-under-par 68 in round one left Wie joint-13th, with 18 places up for grabs, but she eventually missed out by five shots after a second-round 75.

The Hawaiian, 16, said: "I had a couple of bad putts when I didn't want them."

Meanwhile, England's Ian Poulter won the qualifier at Columbus, Ohio, to secure his place at Winged Foot.

The Ryder Cup star, who failed to qualify for the Masters, shared top spot with American Ben Hayes after rounds of 65 and 66 took him four clear of the field.

American veteran Jay Haas, 52, was among the 21 qualifiers and will appear in his 27th US Open.

Haas, who won the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago, first played Winged Foot in the 1974 US Open as an amateur.

Poulter's close friend Justin Rose and former Open champion John Daly failed to grab the one remaining place on offer from a 15-man play-off.

Also among those who failed to qualify were South Africa's Trevor Immelman, Swede Jesper Parnevik, Australians Aaron Baddeley and Peter Lonard and 1986 USPGA champion Bob Tway.

Seventy-nine players were already exempt for the US Open before this week and a further 60 places were decided in 11 qualifiers on Monday.

An additional nine spots are on offer in three qualifiers on Tuesday.

New Zealand's Michael Campbell will defend the US Open title he won last year at Pinehurst.
