Wie wins men's US Open qualifier
Michelle Wie
Wie made her first cut in a men's event earlier this month
Michelle Wie has moved closer to becoming the first female player to qualify for the men's US Open after shooting 72 to win a local qualifier.

Wie now moves to the next stage of qualifying - a 36-hole "sectional" at Canoe Brook in New Jersey in June.

She said: "Playing with the men, I get to learn so much more and when I do well, it feels really good.

"Me and my dad were joking that we're basically playing on all tours this year. I think it's awesome."

Playing on her home island of Oahu in front of about two dozen people, Wie was steady for most of her round on the breezy Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort.

She had four birdies and four bogeys.

The big-hitting Wie has played eight men's tournaments so far and made her first cut at the SK Telecom Open in South Korea earlier this month.

She eventually finished tied for 35th place after a disappointing final round of 74.

Wie announced on Monday that she had accepted an invitation to play at the men's European Masters in the Swiss Alps in September.

It would be the 16-year-old American's debut on the men's European Tour.
