US Open gossip
Iain Carter
By Iain Carter
BBC Five Live golf correspondent

In the fifth of his daily reports from Winged Foot, Five Live's golf correspondent talks about the latest golfing fashions, an appearance from Darth Vader, and the ozone danger.

CAN'T SEE THE WOODS

The Tiger may have departed, but stripes remain the order of the day at Winged Foot.

USGA marketing boss Mary Lopuszynski has confirmed that the biggest seller in the merchandising tent is striped golf shirts.

Usually replicas of the shirts worn by Woods on each of the four days prove the most popular items - not at this US Open though.

FEEL THE FORCE

Kenneth Ferrie
Kenneth Ferrie is happy to show his support for the England team
No fewer than six English golfers made the cut and Sven's team at the World Cup isn't without support in these parts.

England flags and bunting are draped over the gates of one of the imposing houses en route to the course on Mamaroneck Avenue.

Kenny Ferrie has a three lions towel on his golf bag, but our Caledonian reporter Andrew Cotter was somewhat offended.

When he confronted the Geordie, Cotter was then outraged to find that Ferrie's father hails from Edinburgh.

My Five Live colleague was last seen shaking his head, muttering: "Luke Donald's dad is Scottish as well, what's wrong with these people?"

Donald received some odd support on the course. A fan using his best Darth Vader voice whispered: "Luke, I'm not your father." We know that, he's Scottish.

EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE

There's a smog warning in place for the final round here. Apparently we should expect excessive ozone levels.

Ominously a statement issued by the Westchester County Department of Health warns: "Nose and throat irritation, respiratory symptoms and decreases in lung function have been observed in healthy, exercising persons breathing air containing elevated levels of ozone."

They recommend limiting strenuous outdoor activity.

Five Live summariser Jay Townsend has failed in his bid to land us a round at a swanky course on Monday.

All the best courses are closed on Mondays and only caddies attached to the courses are allowed to play. That's his excuse anyway.

Wouldn't want to play with so much ozone around anyway.
