US Open gossip

BBC Five Live golf correspondent

In the latest of his reports from inside the ropes, our man talks Tiger, chats about Campbell and gets lost in New York.

TALKING TO TIGER

Tiger Woods has told us of his heartfelt gratitude for the messages of support he received following the recent death of his father Earl.

But Woods hasn't been greeted with completely positive publicity this week, with leading American commentator and 1973 US Open champion Johnny Miller criticising the world number one for not being forthcoming enough in interviews.

"Every time I've asked him a question, I can honestly say he's never given me a real answer," says NBC's most outspoken golf voice.

"Never once - and I've been pretty nice to him (Woods). I feel like he's never given me the respect I deserve.

"I really believe that he should take the time when somebody in our industry is trying to tell the real story, that he is willing to give the real answer."

For the record, Woods was as open as I've ever heard him during a half-hour pre-tournament news conference here - his first since April's Masters and the passing of his Dad at the beginning of May.

CAMBO'S CONFERENCE CHAT

Now that he's a major winner, Michael Campbell realises his voice is heard like never before.

The Kiwi defending champion has revealed he was told by Jack Nicklaus that he has new responsibilities that go with being a major champion.

Campbell's response was to use his pre-championship news conference as a chance to announce the setting up of a new charity foundation.

The aim is to foster new golfing talent in New Zealand, with the most successful player on the scheme winning the chance to spend a week with Campbell and his coach Jonathan Yarwood in Orlando.

At this point Cambo inadvertently let slip that he was planning to spend more time in Florida, indicating that this current resident of Brighton and Sydney will spend more time in the US from next year.

YOUNG GUNS GO FOR IT

The Winged Foot clubhouse is a magnificent structure.

I was struggling to find an apt way of describing it until the man from the Mirror suggested it was like the sort of home the Sopranos would occupy.

You can always rely on the USGA to cultivate rough and the areas bordering the thin strips of fairway here are as thick as they come.

Errant golfers will be ankle deep in the stuff, though for 15-year-old amateur Tadd Fujikawa from Hawaii make that knee-deep.

He stands only 5ft 1in tall, but this boy has guts. Noticing a space next to Woods' name on the practice round sheet he popped his name up against that of the world number one.

Fujikawa did admit to me that as he wrote his name his hand was shaking so much "my handwriting was real messy!"

LOST IN TRANSLATION

Five Live producer Graham, attending his first US Open, isn't overly impressed.

So far he's been to Augusta, the Belfry and Wentworth. His verdict on Winged Foot: "The clubhouse and surrounds are nice, but further afield it's all tents and noisy generators."

He's a hard man to please.

The Five Live team were delighted to find our way here - eventually.

Reporter Andrew Cotter was in charge of navigating but forgot to look at the directions in time for an important turn.

Instead of map-reading he was discussing whether the answerphone message at the start of the Rockford Files came at the beginning or end of the theme tune.

Suffice to say the journey took rather longer than it should have done!

This after London's searing temperatures led to a delay in our departure. The fuel for our 747 expanded so much that it began gushing from the end of our left wing onto the Heathrow tarmac.

A fire engine stood by, our pilot showed why he'd been to soothing speaking classes and I really wished that I hadn't been assigned a window seat.
