Big things are expected of teenager Zac Gould |
Two leading Welsh amateurs will compete against Europe's top professional golfers next week after being invited to play in the Celtic Manor Wales Open. Zac Gould, 17, is Wales' most exciting young prospect who came to prominence in Europe's Junior Ryder Cup win over the United States two years ago.
He will be joined by 37 year-old Nigel Edwards, a two-time Walker Cup player.
"The invitations are in recognition of their achievements in amateur golf," said Wales Open director Jon Phelps.
"The growth of the game in Wales is something that we at The Celtic Manor Resort are extremely keen to foster, so I hope that their appearance at the event will inspire amateur golfers across the country.
"For both of them, this is a significant opportunity for them to test their abilities against some of the best players in the world."
Another promising young amateur, Ollie Fisher, was the first name on the drawsheet after he was given a sponsor's invite following a personal request from mentor Nick Faldo.
Ryder Cup star Miguel Angel Jimenez will be defending his title on the Roman Road course when the tournament starts on Thursday.
European Tour Order of Merit champion Colin Montgomerie, reigning US Open champions Michael Campbell and Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam are also in the high-quality field.
