Welsh pride in Walker Cup win
Nigel Edwards
Nigel Edwards (bottom right) celebrates with his team
Welsh golfer Nigel Edwards has spoken of his pride in helping Great Britain & Ireland retain the Walker Cup for the first time for 79 years.

For the second time in a row, the United States were sent to a 15-9 defeat, but this time on home territory at Sea Island, Georgia.

Edwards, who arrived home on Tuesday, said he was confident of a Britain & Ireland victory after a stuttering second day.

"To be honest, we didn't play well on Saturday afternoon and ended only one point behind.

"Knowing the potential of the whole team I expected us to win - but 15-9 I couldn't have predicted."

The Whitchurch man lost his singles match 5&4 to Nick Cassini, but was delighted to be part of a winning side.

Expectation

"It was a thoroughly professional performance in an amateur event," he said.

"The conditions were hot, but our preparations were very good. We made a conscious effort not to let it distract us.

"We looked the part, the preparations were right and the result was right."

Edwards, the only Welshman in the 10-man line-up, thinks the Walker Cup win could help lift the Ryder Cup team when they go into action next month at The Belfry.

"We have proved the Americans are not as great as perhaps everyone thinks they are.

"The more international experience we all get the better and the expectation of the team was to win."
