England's Greg Owen squandered the lead with two holes to play and went on to finish second in the Bay Hill Invitational in Florida. Owen led by one on the 17th tee but made a double-bogey five after missing a tiddler as his nearest rival and playing partner Rod Pampling took four.
US-based Owen took a bogey five on 18 for a 69 and 13 under to finish one behind Pampling (72) of Australia.
Darren Clarke was third on 12 under with Lee Westwood (-10) tied fifth.
Mansfield's Owen, 34, was set to take a two-shot lead to the 18th when Pampling bogeyed the 17th to slip back.
 | It's stupid. I threw it away |
But having driven through the green, the Englishman chipped on to three feet and then missed the putt and the short one back.
"You can accept missing the first putt, but just to throw away a shot like that after the hard work you've done all week is just stupid," said Owen, who is still chasing his first PGA Tour win.
"I can't say I got nervous on that putt. I just moved on it, got quick on it, just lost concentration.
"It was just one of those silly mistakes that I'll be remembered for. I threw it away."
He then lipped out his 13 foot par putt on the 18th as 36-year-old Pampling made a par four for his second PGA Tour title.
"Whatever happens with the golfing gods it wasn't my day today," said Owen.
 | It's sad to see but it's golf |
Owen began the day in a tie for second with Clarke, four behind Pampling.
But he picked up four birdies on the front nine to Pampling's two before the Australian racked up a double-bogey on 13.
Pampling grabbed a shot back on 15 but Owen birdied 14 and 16 to set up what should have been his march to glory before fate intervened on the 17th green.
"It's golf," Pampling said. "I was a little down for making bogey, and suddenly I'm tied. It's sad to see. But it's golf.
"It will always be looked at as the one that Greg kind of three-putted, but I know I played great all week. I definitely deserve it. I didn't back down. I kept fighting all the way."
Clarke eagled the long sixth to reach 12 under but he was only able to get as far as 13 under before a bogey on the 17th pegged him back.
Australia's Robert Allenby was fourth at 11 under after a 69 as Westwood birdied five of the last seven holes for a 67 alongside American Ted Purdy.
World number one Tiger Woods, a distant 10 strokes off the lead overnight, completed a frustrating week with a level-par 72 and a share of 20th.
Woods has won a record four titles at Bay Hill and triumphed in three of his five starts this year before this tournament.
