South Africa's Ernie Els fired a opening round 67 to tie for second at the end of the first round of the Bay Hill Invitational in Orlando. Els, continuing his comeback from knee surgery, is one of five players trailing joint leaders Bart Bryant and Dean Wilson by one shot.
Lee Westwood is alongside Sergio Garcia, Tom Pernice, Robert Allenby and Carlos Franco a further shot back.
World number one Tiger Woods is also within striking distance at two under.
Nevertheless, Woods said he was unhappy with his display.
"I didn't feel very good over the ball today - putts, chips, full shots, you name it, everything," said Woods.
"It was one of those weird days where I just didn't have it."
Britain's Justin Rose was level was Woods at two under.
Els, the 1998 champion, said he was very happy with his round.
"I cannot complain," said Els.
"I could be sitting here without any confidence now, hitting the ball all over the place, but the knee has been pretty good, so I'm very happy where I am right now."
