Montgomerie has twice been a US Open runner-up |
Colin Montgomerie's 11th-place finish at Wentworth ensured he qualified for next month's US Open at Pinehurst. The Scot shot a 66 in his last round of the BMW Championship to climb to 50th in the world rankings, with the top 50 gaining automatic US Open berths.
Montgomerie's place was sealed by Kirk Triplett failing to finish second at the PGA Tour's St Jude Classic.
Ireland's Paul McGinley also climbed 28 spots to 40th after coming second behind Angel Cabrera at Wentworth.
Both players now avoid having to try and come through the US Open qualifying tournament at Walton Heath on 6 June.
Britain's Paul Casey (51st) and Frenchman Thomas Levet (54th) slipped out of the top 50, but they have both already qualified for the second major of the year.
Englishman Casey, who missed the cut at Wentworth, and Levet, who tied for 39th, gained exemption for Pinehurst after finishing in the top 15 of the 2004 European Tour Order of Merit.
The US Open will take place at Pinehurst Resort (No. 2 Course) in North Carolina from 16-19 June.
