Argentine Angel Cabrera held off a strong challenge from Irishman Paul McGinley to win the BMW Championship by two shots at Wentworth.

Cabrera shot a five-under-par 67 to finish on 15 under and seal his first European Tour title for three years.

McGinley briefly held the lead after five birdies in the first eight holes.

His 67 left him two shots clear of Australian Nick O'Hern, who shot 64, with overnight leader Peter Hedblom of Sweden joint fifth after a 74.

Tournament favourite and Wentworth resident Ernie Els shot a 71 to finish well down the field.

But Colin Montgomerie raised his hopes of automatically qualifying for next month's US Open with a closing 66 to move into a seven-way tie for 11th on five under.

"I'm only glad I was able to score 66 in very difficult circumstances," said the Scot, who later discovered he had indeed returned to the world's top 50 to book his berth at Pinehurst.

Earlier, Montgomerie was criticised on Saturday by fellow Tour player Gary Evans over his actions at the Indonesia Open in March, when he misplaced his ball after a thunderstorm.

And the Scot responded: "I'm very hurt and very surprised [by Evans's comments] but I'm very glad I was able to go out and prove to myself and everyone else that I can still do this, and do what I do best."

I played well and really felt I was going to win

Cabrera started the day tied for the lead with Hedblom on 10 under.

And the 35-year-old from Cordoba set up the third Tour title of his career with three birdies in the last eight holes in overcast conditions.

Cabrera's last win was at the 2002 Benson and Hedges International Open.

"It's amazing to have won the second-most important tournament in Europe, so I'm very happy," he said.

McGinley had four consecutive birdies from the par-four third and drew level with Cabrera by sinking a curling 20-foot putt for birdie at the par-four sixth.

He reached the turn in 30, but his challenge effectively ended at the par-four 16th, where he twice found bunkers to run up a bogey five.

He also bogeyed the par-five 17th after pushing his drive right into trees.

"I gave it a good shot. I played well and really felt I was going to win," said McGinley.

"At the end of the day he played better than me. I made mistakes on 16 and 17 and it proved costly in the end. I knew the last few holes would be vital and I just didn't do it."

  • England's Steve Webster had a hole-in-one at the par-three fifth in the final round and eventually carded a three-under par 69 to tie for 11th.
