Angel Cabrera shot a six-under-par 66 to grab a share of the lead after the third round of the BMW Championship. The Argentine's charge brought him level at 10 under with overnight leader Peter Hedblom of Sweden, who had led by three strokes but could only card a 73.
David Howell had eagles at the 17th and 18th holes for a 66 to move level with Paul McGinley (72), two off the lead.
Colin Montgomerie's hopes of earning an exemption for the US Open faded after a 73 left him on one over.
The 41-year-old Scot needs to finish no worse than 16th at Wentworth to stand a chance of forcing his way back into the world's top 50.
But he struggled in windy conditions to slip out of contention for a record-equalling fourth win in the European Tour's flagship event.
"I've never seen tougher conditions here. It's a bit of a war zone out there," said Montgomerie, who is tied for 37th place.
South Africa's Ernie Els, England's Luke Donald and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn are also on one over, with Nick Faldo on two over after a 77.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington also struggled as a two-over 74 saw him slip six shots behind Cabrera and Hedblom.
Australia's Nick O'Hern dropped four shots and is now seven off the lead.
Criticised
Montgomerie sought a ruling from the referee on where to play his ball from after his second shot to the last hole finished against the hospitality unit left of the green.
He had been criticised after finishing fourth at the Indonesian Open in March for not playing from the correct spot when replacing his ball.
Montgomerie missed last year's US Open and the Masters last month because his world ranking had fallen too low.
And he looks set to have to enter the 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath on 6 June if he wants to play in next month's US Open at Pinehurst.
"I played 38 holes to get into the Open last year, so I'll do as many holes as I have to this time," he said.
Saturday's third round at Wentworth got under way without Darren Clarke. Clarke, who was joint 11th overnight, withdrew from the event to be with his wife Heather, who is suffering from liver cancer and was admitted to hospital this week.
