Darren Clarke has withdrawn from the BMW Championship at Wentworth to be with his wife Heather, who was admitted to hospital on Wednesday evening. A statement said Heather, who has been suffering from cancer, would undergo "a procedure sometime today."
The Northern Ireland player was in joint 11th place at Wentworth after moving to four under after two rounds.
He had been due to play with US Open champion Retief Goosen on Saturday but the South African teed off alone.
Ryder Cup star Clarke pulled out of tournaments at the end of last year to help his wife fight her illness.
Having undergone chemotherapy earlier this season, she felt well enough to watch him play in the British Masters two weeks ago.
