Annika Sorenstam secured the 58th LPGA title of her career with a successful defence of her Safeway International title in Phoenix, Arizona. Mexico's Lorena Ochoa led from day one and was four ahead with three to play.
But she double-bogeyed the 16th and dropped another shot at 17 while Sorenstam produced a remarkable birdie at the 18th to draw level.
In the play-off at the 508-yard 18th, Ochoa hit her tee shot into water while Sorenstam carded a par five.
"I've learned over the years never to give up," said Sorenstam, who has now won her first two events of the season and four in a row on the LPGA Tour.
"But I love the thrill of coming down the stretch knowing there is still a chance and trying to pull it off."
The $110,000 (52,000) prize saw Sorenstam's career earnings pass the $16m (8.3m) mark - an LPGA record.
Karen Stupples was the leading Briton after a 73 for a share of 15th place.
Both Sorenstam and Stupples said their results were a great boost ahead of the season's opening major - the Kraft Nabisco - which starts in Palm Springs, California, on Thursday.
"I couldn't have asked for a better start to the season or a better build- up to a major," said world number one Sorenstam.
British Open champion Stupples said: "I really feel that I am beginning to run into form at the right time."
