Laura Davies matched the course record of 63 to end the third day just four strokes off the lead at the Wendy's Championship for Children in Ohio. The Englishwoman, who started the day on three under, had seven birdies and an eagle to move to 12 under - four behind leader Paula Creamer.
Cristie Kerr and Soo-Yun Kang of South Korea are on 15 under.
Catriona Matthew, who shared the lead after two rounds of 66, could only card a 77 and is nine strokes off the lead.
Matthew, the defending champion, found water at the fifth for a double bogey before play was suspended for three hours due to torrential rain.
When play resumed, she found water again at the sixth for another double bogey and also had bogeys at the 10th and 14th.
However, she should be given a wildcard place in the European Solheim Cup team when it is announced by skipper Catrin Nilsmark on Sunday.
Davies, who is already guaranteed an automatic place, looked to have missed out on any chance of winning the event when she carded a disappointing 75 on the opening day.
"I don't really understand what happened the first day, but 66 and then 63 are good numbers," she said.
"I am still in it, but I will probably need another 63 or even better to have a chance."
Teenager Creamer had eight birdies in her round of 66 and could have even been further ahead but bogeyed the last two holes.
