McIlroy secures Irish Close title |  Rory McIlroy has won the Irish Close Amateur Championship | Holywood teenager Rory McIlroy won the Irish Close Amateur Championship by beating Galway's Eddie McCormack 3 and 2 in Wednesday's final at Westport. McIlroy is the first player to hold the Irish Close and West of Ireland amateur titles since Bangor man Garth McGimpsey won both titles in 1988. The 16-year-old schoolboy beat fellow Ulsterman Connor Doran from Banbridge 4 and 3 at the semi-final stage. McCormack defeated Angus McAllister 3 and 2 in the other last four match.
