Sweden's Annika Sorenstam has become the first woman to win the same major three years in a row by winning the LPGA Championship.

Sorenstam, who started the final day with a five-shot lead, was never challenged as she hit a one-over-par final round to win by three strokes.

American 15-year-old Michelle Wie was second after hitting a three-under-par 69 final round.

England's Laura Davies fired a 71 to finished tied for third on six under.

Another American teenager, 18-year-old Paula Creamer, who had also finished level with Davies with a 67 - the joint best score of the day.

Sorenstam shot a final round 73 for 11 under par, and although the score suggests the Swede had a poor round, it was far from the case.

The world number one found herself eight in front after four holes of her final round.

She then made four bogeys, including at the last two holes, in a back nine of 39, but by then the result was all but academic.

The victory gave Sorenstam her ninth career major, her sixth title of the year and her 62nd LPGA victory in 11 years on the Tour.

She is also now half way to becoming the first player to win the grand slam of majors in one season.

The Swede won the first major of the year - the Kraft Nabisco Championship - by eight shots, with the remaining two, the US Women's Open and the Women's British Open, yet to come.

"It has been a great week and I am very, very happy," said Sorenstam.

"I felt a lot of pressure and got a little shaky and very nervous towards the end. But I want to win all the majors (this year).

"I have worked hard for it and I know I am now going to be under a lot of pressure at the US Women's Open (starting a week on Thursday).

"But now I am going to take a week off to absorb this victory. It is not perfect that I will be playing two majors in a row but I will turn up at Cherry Hills next Monday and try to be ready."
