England's Laura Davies recorded a second-round 70 to move into second place in the McDonald's LPGA Championship on Friday.

Annika Sorenstam leads the competition after making a 67 for nine under 135.

Davies was two behind, with American Natalie Gulbis on six under and in third place after a 71.

"Obviously I'm very happy with my position," said Sorenstam. "It was good steady golf, hitting a lot of fairways and greens and I'm putting very well."

Davies has not won in America for four years, but a win this weekend would give her enough points to earn entry to the LPGA Hall of Fame.

"That's something I would love to do," she admitted. "But I know it's going to be tough to beat Annika."

Michele Wie, the 15-year-old American amateur, finished the day on four under to make sure she made her 13th successive cut in her 21st appearance on the LPGA Tour.
