Presidents Cup shared
Team captains Gary Player and Jack Niclaus agree to share the Presidents Cup
The US and the Internationals shared the Presidents Cup when the two teams could not be separated after three holes of a sudden-death play-off.

The teams were tied at 17-17 after Sunday's singles and Tiger Woods and Ernie Els then halved the first three play-off holes.

With the light fading, the two teams decided to share the trophy and although the US were the reigning champions, they will not retain the cup.

"It's dark," said Internationals captain Gary Player. "You cannot see the grain on the green.

"It's not like the US Open where you enter on your own. You've got one guy playing for 12 guys. We tie and we both hold the cup."

US captain Jack Nicklaus added: "Both Gary and I feel that both teams have won and we share the cup."

No-one should come away a loser at this event
Tiger Woods
Woods had beaten Els 4 & 3 in the regular singles earlier in the day but matters were much more even in the play-off.

The American sank a 15-foot putt at the third play-off hole to put the pressure on Els but the South African responded with a solid eight-footer.

The USA trailed 12-9 at the beginning of Sunday's action but won the first three singles through Jim Furyk, Jerry Kelly and Kenny Perry.

And after a nip-and-tuck day, it looked as if they would clinch victory with Davis Love III one up on Robert Allenby as the final pairing came to the final hole.

But the American saw his putt from the lower tier of the 18th green roll back towards him and he had to concede the hole.

That match was the only one of the singles to finish all square and forced the play-off but after three holes the bad light forced Woods and Els to a halt.

"It's the right thing to do," said Woods. "No-one should come away a loser at this event."

Els added: "We both had a meeting there and this is the right thing."
