The world number one suffered a double bogey at the first hole and at one point was three shots behind after starting the day with a three shot lead. But for a bogey at the last, he would have had a two shot lead but his challengers must be aware that in 24 of 26 PGA Tour events which he has led going into the final round, Woods has won.
Esteban Toledo, who enjoyed the lead for a few holes, is the nearest to Woods on 14 under after a 67. Fred Funk and Bob Tway are tied at 12 under, and first-round leader Kent Jones is one shot further behind. The double bogey for Woods ended a run of 51 holes without dropping a shot. Of his challengers, Toledo has never won a PGA Tour event and his lone career win came in the 2000 Mexican Open.
Toledo birdied five of the first nine holes and then birdied two of the first four holes on the back nine to get to 16 under. But Woods put the pressure on Toledo with birdies on the 12th and 13th and the Mexican relinquished the lead with bogeys on the 15th and 17th to finish with a 67. Scott Verplank, who had been one of Woods' challengers after the second round, fell away badly after a round of 75. Third round leaderboard |
