Name of the game
BBC Sport Online's Caroline Cheese picks out some of the quirky, offbeat or plain daft stories doing the rounds.

Name game

Women's boxing has always been a controversial sport but it has reached new heights with the unseemly spat which has broken out between two of its exponents.

It seems Elena Reid and Bridgett Riley have both plumped for the nickname "Baby Doll" and neither is prepared to give it up.

And while "Baby Doll" Reid has kept relative silence on the matter, the "Baby Doll" Riley camp is not amused.

"I don't like the fact that she says she's the only Baby Doll when she's not," said her trainer.

They'll be throwing their baby dolls out of the pram next.

Bingo drama

Lee Barber thought his luck was in when he visited his local bingo hall and promptly started to cross off his numbers with pleasing regularity.

But the Ipswich train-driver was forced to abandon his card when the woman sitting next to him suffered a heart attack.

Barber administered first aid to the unfortunate lady until she was stable and paramedics arrived, and it was only later that he realised his card was a winning one.

The frugal bingo hall-owners refused to pay up, saying Barber had not been there to call his win.

However, they have now changed their minds and Barber received 500 for his troubles.

Girls off menu

The Greek national team manager was justifiably proud of the unusual tactics he employed as his team returned from a tricky away trip to Romania with a 1-0 win.

Otto Rehhagel
The Greece coach's tactics proved critical

Otto Rehhagel noticed his players becoming distracted by the waitresses in the Romanian hotel and demanded they be replaced by men.

"We didn't go there to concentrate on Romanian girls but on beating the Romanian team," said Rehhagel.

"The boys needed to concentrate solely on the match. And our 1-0 win shows I made a good decision."

And in case anyone wants to find out the reason for the Greek team's wandering eyes, they were staying in Mamaia.

Fish or foul?

The normally sedate sport of fishing has been hit by scandal with one Canadian angler facing fraud charges after trying to con judges at the Great Ontario Salmon Hunt.

Disappointed by the size of his catch, the audacious competitor decided to beef up the salmon by administering 7lbs of lead piping through its mouth.

But the angler's cunning plan was scuppered when eagle-eyed authorities took a closer look at the surprisingly weighty fish.

"We have strict regulations and the fellow who got him is testament to the checks and measures that take place," said one of the event's sponsors.
