Beck and call
BBC Sport Online's Chris Charles picks out some of the quirky, offbeat or plain daft stories doing the rounds.

Beck and call

The next time a friend tries to leave a message on your answerphone, they could well find themselves listening to David Beckham.

The Manchester United and England star has agreed to let United sponsors Vodafone use his voice on their handsets.

Instead of the usual nondescript monotone woman on the answerphone, callers will hear Beckham's squeaky tones instead.

The message says: "This is David Beckham. (Name of person) is not available, but please leave a message after the tone."

David Beckham
"Sorry, there's no-one to take your call at the moment"

The 27-year-old star has agreed a 2m two-year-deal, which will see his voice and image made available to the phone company's 104m customers.

Rumours that Roy Keane has been signed up for the 'Mr Angry Line' are as yet unconfirmed.

Running for office

The owner of Italy's most famous racehorse has called for the President to make the beast a senator.

Enzo Giordano, co-owner of Varenne, said: "Whenever he races he's acting as an ambassador for Italy in the world."

He told the Corriere della Sera newspaper: "I don't want the President to name Varenne prime minister, but he could appoint him as a lifetime senator."

President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi has not got back to him yet.

It's the second time Varenne has been in the news this week, following a father's decision to name his son after the horse - without his wife's consent.

At least the little lad would have a stable home life.

Singalong-a-Maradona

Footballing legend Diego Maradona is cashing in on his most notorious episode by releasing a record.

Will Maradona cover 'Lip Up Fatty' next?

The Argentine superstar is singing lead vocals on a little ditty cheekily titled 'The Hand of God'.

England fans will not need reminding about that infamous act in the 1986 World Cup, when Maradona punched Argentina towards victory.

The song was originally relased by singer-songwriter Rodrigo, who penned the number as a tribute to his hero.

Early reports suggest Maradona need not bother changing his name to Madonna just yet.
