The joy of football
BBC Sport Online picks out some of the quirky, offbeat or plain daft stories doing the rounds.

The joy of football

Brazilian star Ze Roberto was reportedly very excited by his Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in May, was pictured on the pitch against Borussia Moenchengladbach in an apparent state of arousal.

The photograph in German tabloid Bild showed Ze Roberto in the background, with Leverkusen midfielder Michael Ballack in the foreground.

Ze Roberto insisted the tell-tale shot was caused by his new padded shorts, but Bild are sticking to their story.

If true, it brings a whole new meaning to the term "sexy football".

Aborigine FC

A village football team has secured a sponsorship deal with a tribe of Aborigines.

Aborigines
Excuse me, do you know the Clitheroe score?

Fans of Clitheroe FC could not believe their ears when their team ran out to the strains of a didgeridoo.

The Lancashire outfit, who play in the North-West Counties League, usually rely on local firms for their sponsorship.

But loyal fan Bruce Dowles enlisted the help of the Aborigines when he went on a trip to Australia.

The tribe agreed to sponsor a match, paying 125 for the matchball and taking out an advert in the programme.

Unfortunately the players drew the line at turning out in traditional dress.

Flipping mad

A one-legged swimmer could find himself in hot water after strapping a flipper to his false limb.

Teenager Hunter Scott claims the device gives him better balance, but rivals in his Atlanta swimming league say it gives him an unfair advantage.

The 14-year-old insisted: "Without the flipper, my body tends to roll in the water. I think it's helped me out a lot, but not because it's a propulsion device."

But the Dekalb Atlanta Swim League, whose 10 board members have all resigned amid fears of lawsuits, say Hunter has improved by around four seconds since using the flipper.

The boy's mother, Amanda, said: "Last year, when he was losing, it was, 'Oh your son is so inspirational'.

"This year he started winning, and suddenly people had an issue with his leg."

In other words, it's a flipping nuisance.
