1915: GOLF - India's Jeev Milkha Singh shoots the equal lowest round of his career to take the first round lead at the Irish Open in Killarney. The son of a former Olympic sprinter has an eagle and six birdies on his way to an eight-under round of 63. He is six strokes ahead of Open champion Darren Clarke, seven better than US Open champion Rory McIlroy, nine ahead of last year's US Open winner Graeme McDowell and 10 better than three-major winner Padraig Harrington.

1903: FOOTBALL - Gerard Pique has admitted Barcelona must be patient in their attempts to get Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas to the Nou Camp. "All signings have their due process. Some are easy, some are more complicated," said the defender. "He is an important player for Arsenal so it is sensible that they are trying to keep him. There has been a lot of talk about this, which is normal. It is best to let the negotiations take their due course and see what happens."

1856: EQUESTRIAN - Zara Phillips will formally retire her 2006 World Chamionship-winning horse Toytown at next month's Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park, the Gloucestershire estate where Phillips' mother the Princess Royal lives. The horse is now 18.

1847: RUGBY LEAGUE -Wakefield coach John Kear wants to offer Keith Senior a Super League lifeline. Senior had signed a two-year contract with Crusaders after being released by Leeds, but earlier this week they withdrew from the top flight and the 35-year-old's deal has now been terminated.

1841: HORSE RACING - Trainer Nicky Hendersonhas been fined £3,500 and his runner Heather Royal disqualified after the horse tested positive for a banned substance earlier this year.

1833: RUGBY UNION - England's Courtney Lawes has been given the all-clear after he suffered a neck injury in a behind-closed-doors training match and was taken to hospital for a precautionary X-ray, say the Rugby Football Union on Twitter.

1830: GOLF -Korea's Meena Lee leads the Women's British Open at Carnoustie after a seven-under opening round of 65. Defending champion Yani Tseng is on one under after a 71.

1823: FOOTBALL -Sergio Aguiro's deal with Manchester City is believed to be worth a reported £200,000 a week. No fee for the deal has been confirmed by either club but it is thought City have paid £35m for the striker, beating the £32.5m they paid for Brazil forward Robinho in August 2008.

1651: FOOTBALL - Former Argentina and Tottenham star Ossie Ardiles believes compatriot Sergio Aguero will be a "wonderful" addition to the Premier League. "He is very, very sharp. You give him one yard and this is it, he is gone," said Ardiles.

1343: JUDO - Britain's former world champion Craig Fallon has been selected for next month's World Championships in Paris. After a two-year break from the sport, Fallon returned earlier this year in a new weight category, -66kg. The 15-strong squad will compete from 23-27 August

1152: SWIMMING - After winning the men's 100m freestyle at the World Championships, Australia's James Magnusson told BBC Sport's Sharron Davies: "I'm glad to go out there and get it done. There are plenty of years to come and plenty of speed to come." On doubling up to the 200m, he added: "It's going to be tough getting into the team with [Ian] Thorpe coming back but I think I could do a sneaky 200m down the track."

1149: CRICKET - England captain Andrew Strauss is confident Chris Tremlett will be available for the second Test against India, which starts at Trent Bridge on Friday.
