Daniel Halksworth won a month after coming 15th in the London Triathlon |
Daniel Halksworth beat his rival Nick Saunders by nearly six minutes to win the 25th anniversary Jersey Triathlon in a time of 1.54.58. Saunders had been hindered by lack of sleep, after his wife gave birth to a baby boy during the night. Tom Perchard was third, a further five minutes behind, after overtaking Doc Snook during the 10km run. Despite being a first year novice, Claire Forbes easily won the ladies race in 2.25.02 on a borrowed bike. Saunders said he had done the best he could, given his extraordinary circumstances. "I just wanted to get round and give it my best shot," he said. "I'm sure I could have done better if I'd had more rest. But I wouldn't have it any other way - the little guy decided to arrive last night." For winner Halksworth, a bad memory has been erased and his hard work is now paying off. Claire Forbes won the ladies race with ease - in her first season in the sport |
"Last time we raced, he caught me up on the bike and destroyed me on the run," he told BBC Jersey. "That was a couple of years ago, and I've put a lot of work in since then so I'm feeling really strong. "Now I'm just looking forward to the world championships in a few weeks, trying to get a better result than fifth last year." Perhaps the best performance came from Claire Forbes in winning the ladies race in her first season in the sport. But she told BBC Jersey: "I'm not great at swimming in the sea. My biking is not great, and my transition today was bad. "I'd like to go away to train this winter and see what I can do next year."
