The 2009 Island Games started on Saturday with an opening ceremony at the Wiklof Holding Arena in the Finnish island of Aland. The Jersey team were led by flag bearer, pistol shooter Dave Ward. The event included the traditional water ceremony when Jersey's water-bearers mixed water from home with the water of the other islands. Jersey's water bearers were Aimee McDonnell and Andre Romeril, their two youngest competitors. The two-hour ceremony included the taking of the Island Games oath and entertainment performances.
