The Jersey team at the last Island Games in Rhodes in 2007 |
Bermuda is set to host the 2013 Island Games after rival bidders Prince Edward Island pulled out of the running. The Canadian province says a lack of support from its government is the reason it has pulled out. Alfred Groom, from the Prince Edward Island Games Association, says it could also affect their games future. "Are we going to put all the effort in to round up a hundred athletes and finance that if the government doesn't support their youth?" he said. Next year's games will be held in Aland with the Isle of Wight hosting the 2011 games. If Bermuda does host the event in 2013 then they will be the first ever to be held outside Europe. Bermuda has been the International Island Games Association's recommended bid. If it is the only bidder it will be officially ratified as the 2013 host island at the annual congress in Aland later this year.
