Ian Edmond congratulates winner Kosuke Kitajima Photo's from Barcelona

City of Edinburgh swimmer Edmond trailed behind Japanese pool star Kosuke Kitajima, who won gold with a world record-time of 2:09.42.

It was Kitajima's second world record of the championships. On Monday, Kitajima set a new mark in the 100 breaststroke.

Edmond took the silver medal in 2:10.92 and Brendan Hansen of the United States took the bronze medal in 2:11.11.

"Obviously, I'm delighted to win silver," Edmond told BBC Radio Five Live.

"That was my target before the race, so I've got to be pleased.

"I'd like to have swum a little quicker but in a final it's all about getting in the race and I got what I wanted.

"My preparation this year has been fantastic and I didn't have a lot to worry about.

"I knew I'd swim quick and I really enjoyed it."

Scotland's Graeme Smith looked strong in the heats of the men's 800m freestyle and qualified for Friday's final as the second-fastest swimmer.

But there was less good news for backstroke specialist Gregor Tait of Edinburgh, who missed out on a place in the 200m final after a swim-off.

Tait had finished in a tie for eighth after his semi-final with a time of 1:59.02 but he could not improve on his time in his run-off with Slovakian Blaz Medvesek.

Scotland's other big medal hope, Alison Sheppard, withdrew from the 100m freestyle on Thursday in order to concentrate on the 50m.
