British athletics legend Colin Jackson says he has major doubts about a UK bid for the 2012 Olympics.

The former 110m hurdles world champion and world record-holder says there is a lack of passion among officials and competitors.

The British Government is expected to announce next week whether it will backing a bid to stage the 2012 Games in London.

But Jackson said the need to vote on the issue betrayed a lack of commitment to the event.

"If our Government has to vote on it they shouldn't bid," said the Welshman.

"They haven't got the passion for it. If you want people to be excited about it just go for it. Forget the cost."

Jackson, who is set to retire this spring, said the Sydney 2000 Games was a perfect example of how to bid for and eventually stage the world's premier sporting event.

"I was in Australia when Sydney was awarded the Games," he told the Daily Mail newspaper.

"Nobody was talking about the cost, about what we are going to get out of it.

"They just wanted the Games. There was terrific excitement.

"Britain doesn't have that feel for it, to my mind. So I wonder whether we really deserve to have an Olympic Games."
