Gibbs could be playing in the Premiership with Charlton next season |
United States defender Cory Gibbs has been ruled out of the World Cup with a knee injury. The 26-year-old sustained the injury in his side's friendly against Morocco on Tuesday, and tests have suggested he will be out for a month.
Energie Cottbu defender Gregg Berhalter has been called up as a replacement for Charlton signing Gibbs.
"We are very sorry for Cory - I believe strongly in him as a player and we will miss him," said USA coach Bruce Arena.
"In Gregg, we are fortunate to have a player of his experience ready to step in to his second World Cup.
"I'm confident that Gregg will be able to contribute immediately to our team."
Premiership side Charlton have signed Gibbs on a pre-contract basis from Dutch club Feyenoord and are seeking a work permit.
