Sowden stars as Bees rout Cardiff to reach Cup semis

Stacey Sowden scored twice as Barnet beat Cardiff City 5-0 to reach the last four of the Women's Premier League Cup.

The Bees are the first team to reach the semis as the Leicester City-West Ham, and Millwall-Nottingham Forest games were off due to frozen pitches.

The fourth tie, in which Portsmouth are set to entertain Sunderland, was called off because of County Cup commitments.

In the weekend's only Premier League encounter, Leeds United sprung a surprise 2-1 win over Reading.

Women's Premier League Cup: Cardiff City 0-5 Barnet

Sowden gave Barnet a 19th-minute lead, but Cardiff were well in the game during an evenly contested opening half-hour.

Jade Dempster doubled the visitors' advantage in the 35th minute, however, before two goals in the last five minutes of the first half effectively killed off the Bluebirds.

Holly Sandon and Sowden, with her second strike, hit those killer goals, and the Bees went napping when Katie O'Leary completed the scoring in the last minute of the tie.

Women's Premier League: Reading 1-2 Leeds United

Reading's five-game unbeaten run came to an end as Leeds returned to winning ways after taking just one point from the previous 12 on offer.

Holly Sharp set the visitors on the road to victory with a lofted 20-yard shot five minutes before the interval.

Leah Galton made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, nipping in front of a defender to shoot home from close range.

Mikaela Howell pulled a goal back 10 minutes from time but, despite heavy pressure as the game ran into stoppage time, Reading were unable to force an equaliser.

Leeds remain in the bottom two in spite of their welcome win, while Reading stayed four points behind league leaders Sunderland.
