Striker Brooke Chaplen hit a hat-trick as Everton trounced MTK Hungaria 7-1 to reach the last 16 of the Women's Champions League for the first time.

After a goalless draw in the first leg in Budapest, the Merseyside club blew away the Hungarian champions with a seven-goal blast at the Stobart Stadium in Widnes.

Winger Toni Duggan was on target twice after striker Natasha Dowie had opened the scoring, and there was also an own goal to help the Toffees on their way.

A delighted manager Mo Marley said: "I was frustrated with our performance in the first leg, but tonight we were brilliant.

"There were excellent individual performances throughout the team and it was a great all-round display.

"Getting to the Round of 16 at last is just great - we've underachieved in Europe in the past and taken some stick for it, but we've come good tonight."

Marley's team struck twice in the early stages to calm any nerves and put themselves on the road to a conclusive victory.

Dowie headed home Jodie Handley's ninth-minute corner, and two minutes later Chaplen hooked in an 18-yard volley to open her account.

Duggan scored from 20 yards in the 21st minute, and victory was all but sealed in first-half stoppage time when Timea Gal turned Chaplen's cross into her own net.

The visitors pulled a goal back 21 minutes after the break, Dora Papp heading in substitute Lilla Nagy's cross.

But any hopes of a fightback were killed off within 60 seconds as Duggan bagged her second goal with a low 12-yard shot just inside the far post.

Chaplen forced the ball in from close range for her second goal after 73 minutes, and then completed her hat-trick with a cool 30-yard lob in stoppage time.

In the round of 16, Everton will face Danish side Brondby, whose manager Peer Lisdorff was an interested spectator at the Stobart Stadium.

Marley said: "We've shown our next opponents what we're capable of, but we want to show the whole of Europe and that's the aim now."
