Sunderland achieved promotion to the FA Womens' Premier League with Sunday's impressive 4-0 defeat of Preston.

Mick Mulhern's side edged a point clear of rivals Lincoln OOH on the final day to secure a return to the top flight.

Jordan Nobbs set the ball rolling with a first-half strike, and added another after Lucy Staniforth and Natalie Gutteridge had added to the lead.

The success follows on from that of the club's reserve team who also won their divisional title.

The ladies narrowly missed out on a league and cup double following their 2-1 FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal.

Meanwhile Sunderland's England international goalkeeper Helen Alderson, has ruptured cruciate ligaments in her right knee.

The 21-year-old will undergo surgery and could be out for up to nine months.
