Sanderson lifts Chelsea to second

By Tony Leighton

England striker Lianne Sanderson hit the winner as Chelsea beat Watford 1-0 to move up to second place in the Women's Premier League.

At the bottom, Liverpool's 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers lifted the Reds four points clear of the relegation zone.

And in the Yorkshire derby Leeds Carnegie twice came from behind to claim a 3-3 draw with Doncaster Belles.

Meanwhile in the Women's Uefa Cup quarter-final first leg, Arsenal beat Swedish champions Umea 3-2.

Chelsea 1-0 Watford

It took a penalty to break the deadlock in a game that Chelsea dominated, but they were frustrated by the visitors' defensive tactics.

Sanderson struck her third goal in three games - and her 11th of the season - to win the game with a 41st-minute spot-kick.

Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Liverpool

Danielle Sheen hit her first goal of the season to give the Reds a much-needed victory as they look to maintain their top-flight status.

It could have been a more clear-cut victory but, eight minutes after Sheen's 24th minute goal, Kelly Jones missed a penalty.

Blackburn forced their way back into the game but the visitors deservedly ended the evening with only their second league win of the campaign.

Leeds Carnegie 3-3 Doncaster Rovers Belles

In a rollercoaster of a local derby Leeds trailed twice and led once before the game ended in stalemate.

Precious Hamilton opened the scoring for the visitors in the 15th minute, but Sue Smith equalised from the penalty spot before an own goal gave Leeds a 39th-minute lead.

Hamilton hit her second goal of the night to level the scores three minutes before the interval, and midway through the second half Emily Heckler put Donny back in front.

But Leeds captain Jess Clarke had the final word, her equaliser 14 minutes from time ensuring that honours would be shared.
